Porcupine is a visually striking and technically innovative lighting made of 3D printed resin and LED by the Finnish designer, artist and architect Ilkka Suppanen. Pioneering in the field of 3D printed design, the Porcupine was already conceived by Ilkka Suppanen in 2006 as a table lamp prototype. This architectonic work, combining both organic and mathematical form, is breaking down the boundaries between design, art, craft and technology. Ilkka Suppanen studied architecture at Helsinki University of Technology, and Interior and Furniture Design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki. He completed his studies at Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 1992 and in 1995 he founded Studio Suppanen, which is internationally renowned. In 1997, Suppanen established the award winning Snowcrash designer collective together with three colleagues. In 2000, Suppanen was awarded Design Forum’s Young Designer of the Year prize together with Harri Koskinen and in recent years, Suppanen has won several domestic and international awards such as the Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Prize, The Finnish Cultural Foundation Award and the Ilmari Tapiolassa Prize. His works have been showcased in prestigious international exhibits, such as the Venice Architecture Biennale and in the MoMA in New York, and his works are part of important museum collections such as the Centre Pompidou, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Museum of Andewante Kunst Cologne, the Röhsska Museum Göteborg and the Helsinki Design Museum.
