Hannes Stephensen

“…There is both logic and beauty in the drama that makes it possible for a bird to fly, and some this natural beauty must be possible to translate into a piece of furniture.”

For Hannes Stephensen, Architect MAA, fellow founder and chairman for 6 years of SE (Snedkernes Efteraarsudstillinger), architecture is a question of creating an environment that works well with a visual quality that enriches the surroundings. The joy of good craftsmanship as well as the constructive possibilities and beauty of massive wood is a passion.
The chairs are developed in collaboration with Egevaerk, who signs the exquisite craftsmanship of the pieces. The beauty of the wood and of the inner tension inherent in the living material is subtly underlined by the Japanese inspired junctions and the delicate surface treatment, as soft as skin. He grew up in the environment that fostered many of the most revered Danish design classics. Shaped by this intellectual as well as highly creative background, Hannes Stephensen chose to work as a self-taught carpenter at Denmarks most remote, and indeed very small island, Christiansø. Here, he explored wood as a material for several years before going on to study architecture in Aarhus. Hannes graduated from Aarhus School of Architecture in 1972, and his love of wood and craftmanship has since been instrumental for his oeuvre as a furniture designer and architect.
